Plan Series 03

Series 03

Adjustments

Tweaking the bed sizes and begin phases.

In the second series, we refined the layout by plant sizes. Now we are adjusting bed sizes.

03a

Bed sizes

This section addresses bed sizes in particular. I'd like to get your reaction on these before doing further details about individual plants and construction details.

  1. The lawn area has been increased to the area shown in green. This includes the cart path and new lawn areas. They are sized and positioned relative to trees to minimize mowing difficulty.
  2. Tall ground cover has been added in the gray areas. 2' to 3' tall. This might be Inland oats or Marianna Fern. Specifically, something that can cover a lot of area by seeding or by creeping rhizomes for economy. Also, no mowing.

  3. These areas in black indicate ground covers 4" to 6" high. This might include wild ginger, Asiatic jasmine, vinca minor, etc. Ginger would be the least maintenance. vinca or jasmine would survive more sun. These beds can be planted sparsely now and allowed to fill in over a few years. Also there are other plant possibilities.

  4. Holly fern has been greatly reduced to just 3 small beds indicated with yellow. Holly fern gets about 2' tall and wide.

  5. Solomons seal has been reduced to 3 narrow beds indicated in red. These are about 18" high and variegated.

  6. The Spanish bluebells beds have been reduced. One by the entrance and two by the firepit. These should have a ground cover to fill in during the off months. This could be a geranium that spreads easily like geranium macrorrhizum.

  7. Lavender and thyme bed near the house has been expanded across the new wood stair shown here in dark blue. these plants get to be no more than 18" tall.

6. Geranium Macrorizzhum

Refinement

Plant choice changes, fire pit adjustment, advice from GaPwr, Plant schedule.

Notice that the lawn is flanked by 'vinca minor' groundcover on both sides. I changed the wild ginger to liriope. Liriope is more tolerant of the sun. You may not have enough shade for ginger after the tree thinning.

The fire pit is completely defined per GaPwr requirements.

I've completed the plant schedule (spreadsheet). Notice the key column corresponds to the plan drawing by number. For instance #7=azalea.

Cart Path Redesign

Grill area gravel landing, cart path added back in with adjustments, guidance request from GaPwr.
The cart path is redsigned to no longer intrude into the side buffer. The grill / landing has been moved, resized and specified as gravel.
